It was ridiculously fun, especially for those of us who are already on the slightly more obsessed side of mineralogy/gemmology/pretty shinies (I'm looking at you Angie).
I'm planning on going back there as soon as I am able. <3
Got a chance to try something I've always wanted to try; shaping and polishing a finished cabochon from scratch. Thanks to a uni friend with lapidary experience, a small group of us jewellery makers got a chance to make our own cabochons. We got out eager little fingers into as many techniques as we could in under 2 hours and managed to fit in cutting pieces out of slabs and stones, shaping, dopping, polishing and pruney wet fingers. It was ridiculously fun, especially for those of us who are already on the slightly more obsessed side of mineralogy/gemmology/pretty shinies (I'm looking at you Angie). Adding fuel to the obsession!
I'm planning on going back there as soon as I am able. <3

I'm going to give it a go. :)
On Instagram! Only one photo up there so far but hopefully I can get it going... just don't expect any hashtag crazies :p Wanted to share some of my recent crystal/mineral purchases! These lovely stones were purchased from an Etsy store called Ssstoned. Karen, the owner, was amazingly helpful and so generous with her items and knowledge, I recommend checking out her store, she has a great range of unique and eclectic items as well as some beautiful natural stones and gems. :) These links will take you to more information about each type of stone:
Fluorite (Fluorspar) - CaF2 - Moh's of 4-5 so relatively easy to fracture. Looks lovely for jewellery but use with care. Herkimer Diamonds - SiO2 - Doubly terminated quartz crystals named for Herkimer County, New York. Moh's 7. Watermelon Tourmaline - silicate (a complex one!) - The pink-centred, green version of Tourmaline. Moh's 7-7.5 |
