It was ridiculously fun, especially for those of us who are already on the slightly more obsessed side of mineralogy/gemmology/pretty shinies (I'm looking at you Angie).
I'm planning on going back there as soon as I am able. <3
Got a chance to try something I've always wanted to try; shaping and polishing a finished cabochon from scratch. Thanks to a uni friend with lapidary experience, a small group of us jewellery makers got a chance to make our own cabochons. We got out eager little fingers into as many techniques as we could in under 2 hours and managed to fit in cutting pieces out of slabs and stones, shaping, dopping, polishing and pruney wet fingers. It was ridiculously fun, especially for those of us who are already on the slightly more obsessed side of mineralogy/gemmology/pretty shinies (I'm looking at you Angie). Adding fuel to the obsession!
I'm planning on going back there as soon as I am able. <3

I stumbled upon some of artist, Anthony Howe's, beautiful kinetic sculptures purely by accident and I'm so glad I did. Initially a painter, Howe became tired with his static works and began working with steel after taking a job as a superintendent in a warehouse... in his own words: "I wanted to see stuff move." Some of his works look almost alive, like a perpetually blooming metal flower or like a hybrid creature that is both organic and metallic, moving so smoothly and naturally that you could swear you were looking at a strange alien creature making it's way through alien oceans. I find his work hypnotic, difficult to tear my eyes away, something I could watch in motion for hours and hours. Anthony has a Youtube Channel where he uploads short clips of his sculptures in motion as well as in progress computer aided designs for upcoming projects and ideas. This short video by The Creators Project takes a look into Howe's studio and some of the hows and whys behind his work. These are some of my favourite videos of Anthony Howe's kinetic sculptures; his works have to be seen in motion to be truly believed... what I wouldn't give to see these in person.
